Acupuncture for TMJ & Jaw Pain

Release Jaw Pain, and Relieve Facial Headaches Without Injections or Permanent Night-Guard Reliance.

Is TMJ Pain Keeping You From Living Comfortably?

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders can turn everyday activities—chewing, talking, yawning, or concentrating at work—into a source of constant discomfort.

If you suffer from TMJ dysfunction, you might experience:

  • Morning jaw stiffness or sore cheek muscles from overnight grinding.
  • Popping, clicking, or grinding sounds when opening or closing your mouth.
  • Tension headaches centered around your temples, forehead, or behind your eyes.
  • A tight, painful neck and upper back that never seems to stay loose.
  • Ear pressure, fullness, or ringing (tinnitus) with no underlying ear infection.

At Boulder Dynamic Acupuncture, we specialize in orthopedic acupuncture—targeting the exact facial and neck muscles causing your jaw to lock up, so you can get long-term relief.

Why Night Guards and Medications Often Aren’t Enough

Many of our patients come to us after trying dentists, night guards, or pain relievers with limited success:

  • Night Guards Protect Teeth, Not Muscles: A dental guard acts as a shield to prevent tooth wear, but it does not stop your jaw muscles from clenching at full force all night long.
  • Pain Killers Mask Symptoms: NSAIDs and muscle relaxers temporarily block pain signals, but they fail to resolve the underlying physical muscle knots or nerve irritability.
  • Masseter Botox Is Temporary: Injections paralyze the muscle temporarily, requiring repeated expensive treatments every few months without restoring natural muscle function.

How Orthopedic TMJ Acupuncture Works

Our approach combines modern orthopedic medicine with precise acupuncture techniques to address both the jaw joint and your surrounding nervous system in three distinct phases:

  • Phase 1: Direct Trigger Point ReleaseWe target active knots in the masseter, temporalis, and deep pterygoid muscles. Releasing these tight muscle bundles removes the physical force pulling your jaw off-center.
  • Phase 2: Neurological Down-RegulationMicro-needling calms the hyper-reactive trigeminal nerve and shifts your autonomic nervous system out of “fight-or-flight” clenching mode.
  • Phase 3: Kinetic Chain RealignmentWe treat connected suboccipital neck muscles, shoulders, and upper back tissue to stop tension from traveling straight back into your jaw. With hundreds hours of experience in Rolfing massage and continuing education in fascial acupuncture we’ll work together to realign your entire system so that it doesn’t pull on your facial muscles.

What to Expect During Your Session

  1. Comprehensive Assessment: I’ll evaluate your jaw movement, opening width, biting mechanics, and identify active trigger points in your jaw, neck, and shoulders.
  2. Manual Massage Therapy: I’ll manually release your jaw via doing active a pin and stretch massage technique. From there, with gloves on, we’ll progress to doing intraoral massage to target the pterygoid muscles deep in the jaw. While this massage can feel intense- many patients report a noticeable difference immediately after,
  3. Gentle, Hair-Thin Needling: Using specialized ultra-fine needles, I’ll release tight muscle bands in the masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid muscles. Most patients feel minimal sensation beyond a dull, satisfying release.
  4. Nervous System Reset: Additional distal points on the hands, feet, and neck are used to lower stress levels and calm overall pain pathways.
  5. Integrative Manual Therapy: We combine needle therapy with targeted manual release and cupping therapy for the neck and upper back to ensure complete recovery.

What Patients Say About TMJ Care With Brooks Davis

“I woke up every morning for years with a sore jaw and temple headaches. My night guard saved my teeth, but my jaw was still exhausted. After 3 sessions with Brooks, the clicking stopped and now I wake up pain-free!”

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need for TMJ relief?

Most patients notice a significant reduction in jaw tightness and headache frequency within 2 to 4 sessions. Severe or long-standing TMJ issues typically resolve over a course of 6 to 8 treatments.

Is TMJ acupuncture painful?

Not at all. The needles that I use on the face are even thinner than the ones I use on the rest of the body. You may feel a slight prick upon insertion followed by a deep, pleasant muscle release. Many patients find treatments so relaxing they fall asleep.

Will there be massage to help my facial muscles?

Yes! As a trained massage therapist I incorporate massage into all my sessions! I also find that massage is crucial to target deep held tension in the jaw. The mouth is responsible for so much of our interaction with the outside world, and having it released and relaxed can bring profound change to not only our pain levels, but how we speak our truth.
